Puglia has two international airports: Bari Karol Wojtyla (BRI) in the north and Brindisi Papola Casale (BDS) in the south. Together they cover the region, but choosing the wrong one can add an hour to your transfer and €100 (~$110)+ to your cost. I drive out of both airports regularly. Here is the decision guide I give to every client who asks — based purely on where they are going, not which airport profits me more.

Once you've picked your airport, see how hiring a private driver in Italy works.

Bari Airport (BRI) — The Larger Hub

BRI is Puglia's main airport. It handles about 6 million passengers annually and has year-round flights from most major European hubs, plus domestic connections to Rome and Milan on multiple daily frequencies. Airlines include Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air, British Airways (seasonal), Lufthansa, and several others.

Choose BRI if: your destination is Bari city, Polignano a Mare, Alberobello, the Valle d'Itria, Matera, Taranto, or the Gargano. BRI is also better for multi-destination trips that start in the north and move south.

BRI advantages: more flights, more airlines, year-round service, slightly better airport facilities, rail connection to Bari city.

BRI disadvantages: far from the Salento (Lecce is 155 km), more expensive transfers to southern destinations.

Brindisi Airport (BDS) — The Salento Gateway

BDS is smaller but has grown significantly as a Ryanair seasonal hub. From May through October, it handles direct flights from across Europe. Winter service is more limited but still includes key routes to Rome and Milan.

Choose BDS if: your destination is Lecce, the Salento peninsula (Otranto, Gallipoli, Santa Maria di Leuca), Brindisi city, or Ostuni. BDS is also the better choice for beach holidays focused on the Adriatic or Ionian coasts of the southern tip.

BDS advantages: dramatically closer to Lecce and the Salento, smaller/faster to navigate, less crowded.

BDS disadvantages: fewer flights (especially in winter), limited non-Ryanair options, no rail connection to Lecce, tiny terminal with minimal facilities.

The Ostuni Dilemma

Ostuni is the one destination where the choice genuinely depends on other factors. It is 75 km from BRI and about 40 km from BDS — BDS is clearly closer. But BRI has more flights and may offer a cheaper fare that offsets the longer transfer. If your flights to both airports are similarly priced and timed, choose BDS for Ostuni. If BRI is significantly cheaper or more convenient, the extra 30 minutes of driving is not a dealbreaker.

The Total Cost Calculation

Never compare just the flight price — compare the total door-to-door cost. Example for a couple travelling to Lecce:

RouteFlightTransferTotal per person
Via BDS€120 (~$132)€80 (~$88) ÷ 2 = €40€160 (~$176)
Via BRI€85 (~$94)€250 (~$275) ÷ 2 = €125 (~$138)€210 (~$231)

In this common scenario, the "cheaper" Bari flight actually costs €50 (~$55) more per person when you add the transfer. I see this miscalculation regularly — people book the cheapest flight without factoring ground transport, then discover the real cost at the other end.

Multi-Destination Trips

For travellers visiting multiple parts of Puglia — say, starting in Alberobello, moving to Ostuni, and finishing in Lecce — consider flying into BRI and out of BDS (or vice versa). Open-jaw flights (different arrival and departure airports) are common on European low-cost carriers. This eliminates backtracking and means every transfer moves you forward through your itinerary. We offer one-way transfers between any two points, so the logistics work perfectly.

Which airport has better facilities — Bari or Brindisi?

Bari Airport is larger and has better facilities overall. It has multiple coffee bars and restaurants both airside and landside, several shops, a reasonably priced ATM, a car rental hall with all major companies, and a Ferrotramviaria rail station. The terminal can still feel cramped during peak hours but it functions well. Brindisi Airport is much smaller — essentially a single hall with one coffee bar, one newsstand, a few car rental desks, and an Euronet ATM with high fees. There is no rail connection. BDS closes completely between midnight and five in the morning with no overnight access. Both airports have free wifi though Bari's requires an Italian phone number for registration while Brindisi's does not. If airport comfort matters to you and you have an early morning departure, Bari is clearly preferable. For arrivals, neither airport matters much because you are just passing through.

Can I fly into Bari and out of Brindisi?

Yes, and this is the smartest strategy for multi-destination Puglia trips. Most European low-cost carriers including Ryanair, easyJet, and Wizz Air sell open-jaw itineraries where you fly into one airport and out of another for the same or similar price as a return to the same airport. Check your airline's multi-city booking option. The classic itinerary is: fly into Bari, spend time in Bari city, visit Alberobello and the Valle d'Itria, move south to Ostuni and the coast, continue to Lecce for the final days, and fly home from Brindisi. Every transfer moves you forward, nothing is backtracked, and you see Puglia from north to south in a logical progression. We offer one-way transfers between any two points and can build a complete transfer schedule for your entire trip at a package price.

How far apart are Bari and Brindisi airports?

Bari and Brindisi airports are approximately 115 kilometres apart, connected by the fast A14 highway. The drive between them takes about one hour and fifteen minutes. This matters if you accidentally book a flight from the wrong airport for your destination or if you need to change plans last minute. We do transfer between the two airports for clients who need it. It also puts into perspective the geography of Puglia — the region stretches over 350 kilometres from the Gargano in the north to Santa Maria di Leuca at the southern tip, with the two airports positioned to serve the northern and southern halves respectively. Knowing that the airports are over an hour apart helps explain why choosing the right one makes such a significant difference to your transfer time, cost, and overall travel experience in this long narrow region.

What if my flight is only available to Bari but I am going to Lecce?

This happens regularly, especially in winter when Brindisi has fewer flights. If Bari is your only option for reaching Lecce, the transfer is 155 kilometres and takes about one hour and thirty minutes. Our Business Class price for this route is €250 (~$275) for up to three passengers. While this is more expensive than the €80 (~$88) Brindisi-to-Lecce transfer, it is still a comfortable and reliable option. To reduce the cost per person, consider our Standard Van for groups of four to eight passengers at the same base rate. You can also use the journey productively by adding a stop in Alberobello or Ostuni, turning the longer transfer into a sightseeing opportunity. The train option exists too — approximately €15 per person with a change at Bari Centrale — taking about two to two and a half hours. For a solo traveller on a budget with light luggage, the train is perfectly viable for this route despite the longer journey time.
